There are many different varieties, from sweet recipes to spicy. You can often add different things to the filling mixture to change the consistency and taste to your preferences. The recipe below is a nice combination of both sweet and spicy. For less spice, leave out the red pepper flakes – for less sweet, omit the brown sugar.
Crab Rangoon
You Will Need:
1 package cream cheese, softened
1 can of crab meat, drained and flaked (8-10 oz size)
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1 green onion, diced
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon minced garlic
Won Ton wrappers
Vegetable Oil for frying
Directions:
Mix cream cheese, crab meat, red pepper flakes, soy sauce, green onion, pepper and minced garlic. To assemble the rangoon, you will want to spread the cream cheese mixture in a rectangle shape on 1 triangle. Wet the edges with water and press a second won ton wrapper on the top, making sure the edges are sealed. If need be, use more water. (Note: You can also twist the wrappers to form the flower shape instead as you see in the picture above) Once all the wrappers are assembled, heat deep fryer or wok/frying pan to 350-375 degrees and fry for 2-3 minutes. Place fried Rangoon on a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil before serving.
Crab Rangoon appetizers can be served with a variety of dipping sauces. Hot mustard, duck sauce, and sweet and sour sauce are all popular choices. You can find most of these sauces readily available in the Chinese food section of your grocery store, or you can prepare them from scratch on your own.
